Costume Realisation
The Young Victoria
This project was completed during my first construction module and involved recreating a costume based on The Young Victoria (2009), using Sandy Powell’s designs as reference for a stage adaptation.
I researched early nineteenth-century fashion and contemporary portraits of Queen Victoria to establish accurate silhouette, proportion, and detailing. Working from the model’s measurements, I drafted and adapted patterns to reflect period construction while ensuring correct fit.
The finished costume comprised a bum roll, petticoat, skirt, and boned bodice, requiring an understanding of layered structure and how underpinnings support outer garments.
This project demonstrates early competence in pattern drafting, historical research, and construction sequencing, forming a foundation for later work in structured costume and tailoring.
