Dye & Breakdown for Character
Squire Hare
This project followed the body padding module and focused on developing costume for the character of Squire Hare, with particular attention to colour, structure, and early tailoring principles.
The costume was constructed entirely from dyed calico. Using dye techniques developed in workshop sessions, I mixed and applied colour to match the original character illustration. Historical clothing texts, performance references, and period fashion photography informed the garment choices and overall silhouette.
I drafted scaled patterns for the waistcoat, breeches, and tailcoat, translating research into wearable form. This project marked my first sustained engagement with tailoring structure, requiring close attention to fit, internal support, and movement so the costume remained both period-appropriate and functional.
The work demonstrates an early understanding of tailoring logic, pattern development, and the relationship between character, structure, and wearability.
